BSTI’S DR. NICHOLAS SANTELLA PUBLISHED ON RESULTS FROM HIS RESEARCH ON THE IMPACTS OF NATURAL HAZARDS AND CLIMATE CHANGE

BSTI’s Dr. Nicholas Santella recently published results from his ongoing research on the impacts of natural hazards and climate change on the petroleum and hazardous material handling industries.

Findings indicate that the fraction of reportable releases caused by natural hazards has increased in recent decades, in large part due to increased releases from hurricanes as well as floods, storms, and wind.

The frequency of the releases is correlated with climate indices and will continue to increase given predicted climate trends.

The industry can better prepare itself with greater attention to natural hazard risk, particularly concerning bulk storage of petroleum and chemicals.
