"THE BEST WAY OUT IS ALWAYS THROUGH." – ROBERT FROST
My passion for nature and the environment can be traced back to my youth. I was raised in the Lehigh Valley; about 10 miles west of Allentown in the Village of Orefield. At the time, our neighborhood was surrounded by farmlands, orchards, and woods. A great place for a kid to explore and investigate. Our family vacations typically consisted of tent camping trips in places such as the north Maine woods, the Outer Banks, western Pennsylvania, upstate New York, and New England. My dad was an avid outdoorsman and served as the Scoutmaster of our Boy Scout troop. My mom loved camping and ice skating. This upbringing fostered in me a curiosity to study and understand the natural world which led me to environmental science in college. After graduating from Shippensburg University, I moved west and earned a master’s degree in Earth Sciences from the University of Northern Colorado.
Over the course of my 25-plus year career in environmental consulting, I have had the opportunity to work in numerous states and Canada on a variety of projects from complex federal superfund sites to privately funded redevelopment projects. The early part of my career was mainly spent on larger, long-term projects such as the Rocky Mountain Arsenal near Denver (cleanup and transitioning of a former weapons manufacturing facility into a National Wildlife Refuge) and the New Bedford Harbor project in southeastern Massachusetts (PCB sediment assessment and remediation). As my career evolved and I changed employers, my project portfolio and skill set became more diversified and included real estate and transactional due diligence, supporting redevelopment work, quality oversight on large-scale federal sites and emergency responses, and people management.
Over the past 15 years or so, my focus and passion has been increasingly centered on brownfield redevelopment projects. I love everything about a brownfields project, but preservation of greenspace is my favorite benefit. I have been fortunate to work with some great clients on award winning projects such as the Knitting Mills (Reading, PA), Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market, and Roberto Clemente Park (Lancaster, PA) which were all recognized with EPA Region 3 Phoenix Awards. I currently serve on the Board of the Brownfield Coalition of the Northeast (BCONE), a non-profit dedicated to facilitating the sustainable redevelopment of brownfield sites from Maryland to Maine.
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Marcella, our three children, and our trusty chocolate lab. At present, the kids are in college, so this gives us a good excuse to travel and visit them on the weekends. My hobbies include skiing, ice hockey, hiking/running, kayaking, gardening, volunteering, and generally anything that gets me outside.
